About us

Ally Reid and Shelby Seymour, founders of LAYR

Meet the founders

We're two founders who built separately for years and came together to create something bigger than either of us could build alone.

Shelby Seymour, B. Eng

Founder & CEO

Shelby Seymour is a mechanical engineering graduate from Memorial University of Newfoundland and the founder of Beaux 3D, a 3D-printing business focused on useful, functional products for everyday life.

While completing her degree, Shelby grew Beaux 3D from a single printer and a handful of online listings into a growing manufacturing business. Managing CAD design, production, fulfillment, and customer experience gave her a firsthand view of both the possibilities and the friction in making physical products.

Growing up in Eastport, Newfoundland and Labrador, Shelby learned early that making things could create opportunity. Craft fairs, handmade projects, and small experiments became a lasting instinct to ask how something could work better, look better, or make life easier.

That mindset now shapes LAYR: a place designed to make it easier for independent makers to turn ideas into products people can discover and enjoy.

Ally Reid, B. Eng

Founder & CTO

Ally Reid is a computer engineering graduate from Memorial University of Newfoundland and the founder of Clay by Ally, a handmade jewellery business specializing in polymer-clay earrings and accessories.

What began with a small clay starter kit grew into a product-based business serving customers across Canada and the United States. Designing collections, making each piece, photographing products, managing inventory, and fulfilling orders gave Ally experience across every stage of building a brand.

Her background in engineering and experience as a maker now come together at LAYR, where she helps build technology that makes manufacturing more accessible, connected, and easier to navigate for creators.

The shared idea

How we came together

Shelby and Ally built businesses independently, but kept encountering the same challenges with manufacturing, fulfillment, sourcing, and scaling physical products.

As 3D printers became more affordable and capable, more people gained the ability to make products from homes, workshops, and small businesses. The surrounding tools, however, remained fragmented for designers, printer owners, sellers, fulfilment providers, and customers.

They saw an opportunity to connect the whole ecosystem rather than improve only one part of it. That idea became LAYR: a marketplace where physical products can be designed, manufactured, sold, and fulfilled in one place.
